Program Overview

SBAoA offers seven levels of ESL instruction, available:

  • Online (virtual classes)
  • In-person (at our location)

We offer morning, noon, and evening classes. Our comprehensive program includes:

  • Citizenship classes
  • Workplace ESL
  • Conversation skills
  • Computer and digital literacy
  • Reading and writing skills

Mission Statement

The Somali Bantu Association of America’s non-credit ESL program provides students with diverse learning opportunities to achieve English language proficiency and attain personal, academic, vocational, and civic goals.

What Can I Expect?

Succeed in learning English or prepare for citizenship with our courses:

  • General ESL: Seven levels of instruction covering listening, speaking, reading, writing, vocabulary, and grammar development. Intensive 8-week terms enable rapid progress.
  • Conversation Skills: Beginner and intermediate classes foster listening and speaking skills in a supportive environment.
  • Reading & Writing Skills: Beginner and intermediate classes enhance students’ reading and writing abilities.
  • Workplace ESL: Improve workplace communication skills, including:
    • Interpreting informational texts
    • Writing job-related documents (resumes, etc.)
    • Responding to interview questions
  • Citizenship: A 48-hour, open-entry class with personalized instruction, individualized assignments, and free resources such as:
    • Computer access
    • Instructional videos
    • Study packets

Program Eligibility and Fees

  • Free for refugees with less than 5 years of residency in the United States.
  • Low-cost for refugees with more than 5 years of residency in the United States.
